In app calling is primarily designed for markets where data has become ubiquitous and cellular minutes and antiquated service. This leads to entire markets where texting and calling is done over data via whatsApp. When Uber drivers discover the need to communicate with riders to coordinate the pickup, they often are forced to buy prepaid minutes, thus incurring an additional unexpected expense on top of their unlimited data plans.

However, in-app calling also provides many benefits to other markets where cellular plans are still common. Just as with in-app chat, bringing communications in-app now means you know immediately who is calling you, you never have to leave the uber app, and you can use contextual actions to optimize the coordination process.
